A Time To Celebrate

A Time To Celebrate

“May all the sweet magic of Christmas conspire; to gladden your hearts and fill every desire.”

Jay walking up to his father,  with his tea said ‘So, Dad can I ask why do we celebrate Christmas, Since we don’t have a Christmas tree, plus its India and we are not even Christians. I am 12 years old now, I don’t even go to Santa anymore, I don’t mind the gift and the chocolate but I do wonder why is it necessary to celebrate something we are not a part of.’
His dad sipping his tea replied ‘You are holding the tea wrong if its spills at me, then no gifts for you buddy. Well truly from my side we celebrate because we have a holiday and your mom likes to see my wallet empty so the gifts. The thing is it is celebrated to enjoy the birthday of Jesus Christ; non-Christians also celebrate it because it is a good gesture and we are not believers of Christ but a celebration of the neighbor’s is a celebration of ours.’
When Jay was about to say anything his mother interrupted and said ‘Yeah you do love the concept of Love thy neighbor.’
His dad without wasting a second said ‘I didn’t even meet the neighbor’s, you need to trust me seriously, I don’t even go out other than work.’
His mom giggling replied ‘I know. I was just messing, by the way Jay do you know Christmas was not the main celebration of the Christians.’
Before his mom could end, Jay said ‘Yes I looked it up on the internet. In the early years of Christianity, Easter was the main holiday; the birth of Jesus was not celebrated. In the fourth century, church officials decided to institute the birth of Jesus as a holiday. Unfortunately, the Bible does not mention date for his birth (a fact Puritans later pointed out in order to deny the legitimacy of the celebration). Although some evidence suggests that his birth may have occurred in the spring (why would shepherds be herding in the middle of winter?), Pope Julius I chose December 25. It is commonly believed that the church chose this date in an effort to adopt and absorb the traditions of the pagan Saturnalia festival.’
His mom pinching his ear said ‘And you couldn’t learn the long answers because they were too long.’
His dad said ‘That is true but do you know in many families it is the highlight of the year when everyone gathers around the elaborately decorated tree and the room is bathed in festive lighting; children’s eyes light up as they admire their gifts and you can simply forget about your everyday worries. Christmas and Advent time exercise an unmistakable magical charm over people. As the days get shorter and colder and you can feel wintertime approaching, many people console themselves about the last few warm autumn days coming to an end by thinking about the upcoming Christmas.’
His mom said ‘Yes every celebration is to forget about everyday worries and spend the time with family. The fun time, not the regular time, moving out, having a ride, maybe meeting a funny Santa, having laughs or watching your father doing HO HO HO each Christmas. Every celebration is not just for someone it is for you too, it was everyone who wants to have some quality time with family and have fun. It’s not always that you can have fun and get gifts; Christmas is like a birthday with everyone having the gift. Jesus Christ might not be the god we pray to but he is a god and we respect it by celebrating this day while having a lovely quality time with our family and getting some great gifts.’
His dad finishing his tea said ‘Steal my lines and be the one to know it all but I still said a better answer.’
Jay leaving the hall said ‘I got it, I will celebrate it, just now don’t just fight over it, it’s Christmas, So Merry Christmas’ HO HO HO
