Is Money the new oxygen?
Is Money the new oxygen?
Money is the circulating medium of exchange as defined by government. But, what was before money? The barter system, I guess everyone with basic knowledge of history knows about barter system; however, it is a trade in which there must be a coincidence of wants. Before two people can trade one must want exactly what the other has to offer, when and where it is offered, so that the exchange can occur. This system has been used for centuries and long before money was invented. Whereas money permits the value of goods to be assessed and rendered in terms of money and trade can take place at a place and time of the buyer's choosing. Oxygen is air, the stuff we breathe, the thing that makes our lives possible. It is an element, a basic chemical found on the earth.
So my question is that whether money has become oxygen for livelihood?
Let’s begin the debate between the 2 finalists of this game. The 1st finalist is Mr. Mike and our 2nd finalist is Mr. Jack. So let’s start with Mr. Mike who has scored better than Mr. Jack in other rounds and give Mr. Jack sometime for his answer as this is his final chance.
‘Sure. I will go first. It’s simple and I have always given a thought to it’.
Mr. Mike then stands and points to everyone and starts his speech on the given topic in a straight but humble way;
‘So you say money is the new oxygen but I deny it, Money is just like you stated before a method to standardize exchanges and get what you want in return and if we think money is oxygen, we would die fast enough. We need oxygen to breathe 24/7 but we don’t need money 24/7. Let me give an example, I am at home I earn little money but I have enough to feed my family and also the time to spend with them, but they wouldn’t stay happy unless their wants are not fulfilled and that won’t change their living status. You know why? Because money can be used for wants whereas oxygen is something that we need for every heartbeat in our body. Don’t forget even beggars live but people that can’t have intake of oxygen die in a fraction of second.
Mr. Jack stood up looked at Mr. Mike and smiled. Mr. Jack walked up to him put hand on his right shoulder and started his speech ‘My friend here says even a beggar lives. So Mr. Mike do you know what the life of a beggar is, he can’t have food or pleasure and never can fulfill needs. Don’t you understand oxygen is a thing his body needs only to breathe, but to live life you need water, proper food and everything. You didn’t understand the question. It wasn’t a question of money and oxygen it was a question of living life, have you ever wondered what is money in your life? Everybody has a different meaning of money in his or her life other than the standardize meaning, for some it means having food at night; for some it means having a gift; for some it means getting someone’s attention; for some it means having power. Oxygen keeps you alive for fractions of seconds but without money you can’t have anything that you want or need at times. It’s not wrong to have wants, people work hard for what they want and earn their wants. Money has power over some, like do you know when someone gives you a job you work hard you earn money but it was never a fact of earning. Life is about doing something not becoming slave for money, the question asked is money the new oxygen? No it is not, I agree to that with Mr. Mike. Money actually is the new ruler-ship, as money dictates things to happen the way desired. Do you know at some places money has so much power that if you have enough money then you are legal enough to do anything. Money is the source to happiness some deny it but it is, given enough money, it solves half the problems around the whole world from poverty and homelessness to technology. The thing with money is sometimes it even makes people do different methods to get it like robing, terrorizing, murdering etc. Money has made people blind, it has overpowered upon us and we can’t actually see it. Money was invented to help not to create crisis but it has been leading to it ever since.’
There was silence among everybody. It was the end of a debate but the beginning of a thought long buried.
